Right You Are

There is an ever increasing plague of right wing ideology sweeping across the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in the United States. Although it has been war and corporate greed that has created the fiscal mess the country now faces, the blame once again has been placed firmly on the shoulders of the left. Instead of acknowledging the failed policy of the Reagan era of borrowing money for tax cuts, they blame social spending. Instead of blaming massive military spending, they blame the poor. Why is it always that when the world can least afford this type of backwards thinking, it becomes increasingly prevalent? Tough decisions need to be made about what the country can afford, and what the needs of the people really are.

“Religion is the opiate of the masses.” If there is one thing we can learn from the Marxism, this is it. Religion has and always will be a tool used by those wishing to oppress and control the populace. If you can convince the people at the bottom of the income stream that their own plight is the result of godless heathens, and not the result of restrictive policy against them, the battle is half won. “Blessed are the poor for theirs shall be the kingdom of heaven” or something like that. Beautiful words written by the wealthy elite to shame people into wanting less for themselves and their families. Christians blaming Muslims, Muslims blaming Christians. Perfect, this way the eyes of the people are always diverted from the real issues, to made up ones.

Education is the key to always making government accountable to the people. If people can fully understand what the barriers are to their own success, they can ensure that policies are there to aid them, and not enslave them. It is no wonder given this, that education funding is placed so low on government’s agenda. To ensure the long term prosperity of a nation, education needs to be the cornerstone. Education needs to be expansive, ubiquitous, inexpensive and ever improving, and yet has been left in an ever increasing state of decay. If people really want a better life for themselves and their children, they need to start thinking for themselves and demand that education be truly available to everyone.

War. Do we really think that sending our militaries into other countries is actually a way of improving the lives of those citizens. If only a fraction of the money being wasted on these foolish military efforts was used to actually improve the lives of those people, democracy would eventually flourish. If global trade policies were written to ensure level playing fields, instead of enriching a chosen few, prosperity would improve globally. When people go hungry, when they fear for the future, when their lives are worth so little, they will always lash out at those they believe, rightly or wrongly, to be the cause of their suffering. Slavery is wrong, whether it is domestic or in a country far away.

The United States has brought great things to the world in the form of science and innovation, arts and entertainment, legal policy and human rights. Why now does it seek to destroy all that? Lead by example. Show the world it is willing to steer itself back on the right course. Give up this extreme ideology and make true positive change not just for the good of its own people, but all people of the world. If they continue this ill conceived right wing philosophy that brings everyone in the world down to the lowest possible denominator, we better hope there is a god and not the asshole one religions seem to cherish so much.
